Journey
The stories of violence against these woment are a crisis that cannot wait to be addressed.
The Journey of VAWA & MMIP begins in the United States, when violence against Native women has reached unprecedented levels on tribal lands throughout the country and in Alaskan Native villages.
More than 1 in 2 have experienced sexual violence. Native women and men, organizations, and politicians share stories of how and why Native women continue to suffer higher reate of forcible sexual assault and have reported rates of domestic violence up to 10 times higher than the lower 48.
Is the Violence against missing and murdered women shrouded by a lack of a dilligent and adequate federal response. Law enforcement as well as native women convey that many rapes during their lifetime are committed by a non-Native man! These perpetrators exploit gaps in tribal jurisdictional authority and target Native women as "safe victims."
